Rickter Scale 2.0 Life Board

Empower The Client

Rickter Scale 2.0 Life Board is a powerful mechanism. Part of the power lies in the way it can structure and frame an interaction.

Its design and sequence of 10 headings, empowers the client by creating choice about what and how much is disclosed. This increases confidence in the Process.

The Life Board is flexible in its application to many different fields of work. By offering a structured framework, it lends itself to a way of working that integrates the practitioners’ own strengths, experience and professional expertise.

It gives the practitioner opportunity to use professional skills, judgement and knowledge, to stay with an issue or to move on to another as appropriate to the client’s situation and the purpose of the interaction.

It is designed to be non-threatening and enables the practitioner and client to raise and discuss any issue, whether considered sensitive by client or practitioner, in a non-judgemental, structured and relaxed way.

To help the client identify desired positions on the Life Board, the practitioner can support achievement of a positive emotional response to sensitive issues.

The process of seeing a wider perspective (the big picture) and recognising and acknowledging connections to other headings on the Life Board, can have very positive outcomes by effecting shifts in perception and awareness.

It incorporates several theoretical approaches and techniques, one of which is anchoring, whereby a client is encouraged to keep their finger pressed on to a slider at different points on the Life Board scales, in order to notice and reflect upon their thoughts and attendant emotions.

The brain makes a strong association 'anchor’ between the numerical scaling of their response to each question and their spontaneous thought process and related emotions, creating a 'trigger'.

This makes it possible for the practitioner to later return to that same scaling on the Life Board, enabling the client to access the same thought process and emotion as they experienced the first time they answered that question.

Rickter Scale 2.0 experience helps clients see a future away from the situation they are in, which may be chaotic and leaving them unable to see a way forward.

It is all too easy to deal with surface issues, but this does not necessarily help the client to achieve their potential. If clients are to be helped to overcome barriers to learning or personal growth, we need to be prepared to help them address the underlying issues. These may well be perceived as sensitive.

A crucial issue for the practitioner and client is the identification and prioritising of issues that will allow the client to contribute to their own action plans, thereby taking ownership of those issues.

Once this has been done, the use of the Life Board at a second or subsequent interaction can help to monitor the client’s movement in relation to goals or outcomes.

Individual responsibility and pro-activity are characteristic of using the Life Board, enabling the client to explore possibility and make own choices, whilst receiving on hand, non-judgemental support.
